The silent thief of sight, and why early checks matter
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, the cable that carries images from your eye to your brain. It is often linked to raised pressure inside the eye, but it can also happen when eye pressure is normal.
Most people with glaucoma feel no pain and notice no change. Side vision fades so slowly that it often goes unnoticed until much of it is lost.
Who should get their eyes checked?
- Everyone over 40, even with no symptoms
- Anyone whose parent, brother or sister has glaucoma
- People with diabetes, high blood pressure or high short-sightedness
- People on long-term steroids (eye drops, tablets or inhalers), or with a past eye injury
Damage is permanent
Vision lost to glaucoma cannot be brought back.
Early treatment works
Eye drops, laser or surgery can slow or stop further damage.
It runs in families
Close relatives of people with glaucoma are at higher risk.

What happens during your glaucoma check
No single test can diagnose glaucoma. Together, these tests give your specialist a complete picture.
Eye pressure check
A gentle puff of air, or a light touch after numbing drops. Raised pressure is the main risk factor for glaucoma.
Gonioscopy
After numbing drops, a special lens rests gently on your eye so the doctor can see the drainage angle. It takes a minute and doesn’t hurt.
Pachymetry
Measures how thick your cornea is. A thin or thick cornea can make eye pressure read too low or too high.
Optic nerve photographs
Detailed photos of your optic nerve, kept as a record so future check-ups can spot any change.
OCT optic nerve scan
Uses light to measure the nerve fibres around your optic nerve. No radiation, nothing touches your eye.
Visual field test
You look into a bowl and press a button each time you see a small light. It takes about 20–30 minutes for both eyes. It’s normal to miss some lights.
Painless, start to finish. Numbing drops are used for any test that touches the eye. Your specialist explains every result before you leave.

Glaucoma Care: frequently asked questions
Can glaucoma be cured?
Glaucoma can’t be cured, but it can be controlled. Eye drops, laser or surgery can slow or stop further damage, which is why finding it early matters so much.
Can I have glaucoma if my eye pressure is normal?
Yes. Glaucoma is often linked to raised eye pressure, but it can also happen when pressure is normal. That’s why a complete evaluation also looks at the optic nerve and your side vision, not pressure alone.
Does glaucoma run in families?
Yes. Close relatives of people with glaucoma are at higher risk. If you have glaucoma, ask your brothers, sisters and grown-up children to get their eyes checked.
How long does a glaucoma check take?
Please allow 2–3 hours. The tests take time to do well, and the visual field test alone takes about 20–30 minutes for both eyes.
Do I need to stop my eye drops before the test?
No. Keep using your eye drops as usual unless your doctor says otherwise, and bring them with you.
