Myopia and your child’s eyes

Why children’s myopia needs more than new glasses

Myopia, or short-sightedness, means distant things look blurry while near things stay clear. It usually starts in the school years and tends to increase as a child grows, because the eye itself grows too long.

The earlier myopia starts, the more it can progress. High myopia in adult life raises the risk of serious eye problems such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and myopic macular degeneration. Slowing it down in childhood protects your child’s eyes for life.

Who should get their eyes checked?

  • Children aged 4–16 who haven’t had a full eye check-up
  • Children with one or both parents short-sighted
  • Children whose glasses power has gone up in the last year
  • Children with long screen or study hours and little time outdoors
01

It’s becoming more common

More children are becoming short-sighted, and at a younger age.

02

It can be slowed

Low-dose atropine, myopia control spectacle lenses and healthy habits can slow how fast myopia increases.

03

It runs in families

Children with short-sighted parents are at higher risk.

Your tests, explained

Your child’s tests, explained

Every test is gentle and child-friendly. Nothing involves needles.

Vision assessment

Your child reads a picture or letter chart suited to their age.

Cycloplegic refraction

Drops relax the eye’s focusing so the true glasses power can be measured accurately.

Axial length

Measures the length of the eye. It’s the most reliable way to tell whether myopia is progressing.

Corneal topography

A map of the front surface of the eye, used to plan myopia control options.

Squint and binocular vision

Checks that both eyes are straight and work well together.

Myopia risk profile

Parental myopia, screen time, outdoor time and age of onset, put together into a risk level.

Bring your child’s glasses and any past eye reports. A parent or guardian must come with the child. Drops blur near vision for 6–24 hours, so avoid booking the day before an exam.

Signs your child may be short-sighted

  • Squinting to see things far away
  • Sitting close to the TV or holding books very close
  • Trouble reading the board at school
  • Headaches or eye rubbing after study
  • One eye turning in or out
  • Losing interest in sports or outdoor play

Children rarely complain about blurry vision, because they don’t know what clear vision should look like. A check-up is the only way to be sure.

Simple habits that help

Everyday habits for healthier young eyes

  • Time outdoors, every dayDaylight and looking into the distance are good for growing eyes.
  • Breaks from screens and booksShort, regular breaks from near work rest the eyes.
  • Good reading habitsGood lighting, and books held at a comfortable distance, not too close.
  • Regular eye checksMyopia can change quickly in growing children, so check-ups matter.
FAQs

Myopia & Pediatric Eye Care: frequently asked questions

Can myopia be cured or reversed?

No. Myopia control slows progression; it does not stop or reverse myopia. The aim is to keep your child’s final power as low as possible.

Does screen time cause myopia?

Long hours of near work and screen time, together with little time outdoors, are linked to a higher risk of myopia. They are part of the risk profile we assess for your child.

What is low-dose atropine?

Very weak atropine eye drops that are used to slow how fast myopia increases. Your child’s Paediatric Ophthalmologist will advise whether it’s right for your child.

What are myopia control spectacle lenses?

They look like regular glasses, but have a special lens design that helps slow how fast the eye grows longer. MiYOSMART and Stellest are examples of this type of lens.

When will these packages be available?
