Protect the vision you have
Glaucoma can’t be cured, but it can be controlled. Using your eye drops correctly every day is the most important thing you can do.
Using your eye drops, the right way
Wash your hands
Shake the bottle if your doctor asks you to.
Tilt your head back
Gently pull down your lower eyelid to make a small pocket.
Put one drop in the pocket
Don’t let the bottle tip touch your eye or eyelashes.
Close your eye, press the inner corner
Hold for 1–2 minutes so more medicine stays in the eye.
Wait 5 minutes between drops
If you use more than one kind, so the first isn’t washed out.
Close the bottle tightly
Store it as the label says.
Good habits
- Never stop on your ownYour eyes may feel fine, but the drops are still working. Stopping can let damage return.
- Same time, every daySet a phone alarm or link your drops to a daily routine like brushing your teeth.
- Tell every doctorSome medicines, such as steroids, can raise eye pressure.
- Report side effectsRedness or irritation? Tell us, as there are usually other options.
Glaucoma runs in families. If you have glaucoma, ask your brothers, sisters and grown-up children to get their eyes checked. Early detection protects them too.
